At Gallery Garaz we have two sayings:
The opening of an exhibition is every day. – Every day is lavish.
Bring poetry and music
- your own or a favorit from any time or place.
Speak it, sing it or read it out. Or if you want, we'll do it for you!

Gallery Garaz in Basel
The word garage comes from the northern French word "garir" and from the German word "bioaron" – to take care, to protect or to save. Therefore the original meaning of the word
garage is to cater to or take care of something.
Heidegger in his Being
and Time talks about “the charge”, which is the
very basic meaning of our existence. In this context,
one shouldn’t only exist, but should also take
care of existence. The Garage thus becomes an expression of caring for existence.
This is the vision of Gallery Garaz, an off space in Zlin in the Czech Republic where I am studying and where we are taking care of culture. A part of our caring involves hosting many poetry nights and I would like to share this with artists and others in Basel.
On Friday May 7 at 8:00 pm, you are invited to join us for an open mike poetry and acoustic music night like those that are held in Zlin. I will also make a small Gallery Garaz in a box so that artists and friends in Basel can peek into the space in Zlin as though looking at themselves in a mirror – we are all reflections of each other.
I will then take a recording of this experience back to the Gallery Garaz so that artists there can see into the mirror of culture in Basel. In this way we will make a virtual Garage that cares for culture beyond time and space.
